Day 1: The First Slice of a Pinay Teacher

Hey Slicers! So the first question you are probably asking as you see my blog title is "what is a Pinay?". Pinay is another way to say that I am a Filipino/a woman. Where I am from, it is rare to see Filipino teachers or other teachers of color. Coming from the stereotype of pursuing a career in the healthcare field (nursing!), I already knew that was something I did not want to pursue since science was not my strong suit. There is always that pressure to pursue a career in the healthcare field from family, friends, and especially teachers who believe in the stereotype. I was one of the lucky ones that had family who supported the career I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I always had this mindset when I first wanted to be a teacher that I wanted to inspire other children of color to pursue any career they want since I understand the pressure that society puts on children to pursue careers that they may not be as passionate about.

Besides the fact that I am Filipino, I am a 1st year learning behavior specialist that works mostly with Kindergarten-2nd graders and some 6th graders, so there will be a variety of stories that will be shared on this Slice of Life Journey. I am also a foodie, bookworm, and movies/TV shows enthusiast.

A challenge that I just finished in the month of February is to watch a romance movie for each day of the month of February. Romance movies are my favorite genre and watching these movies was such a great way to destress from the craziness of teaching in February (the worst month of the year). The last movie I finished was You've Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. This movie was definitely higher up on the list of good romance movies, so if you have not watched this movie yet, I would highly recommend. If my life were like these movies though, I think I would go crazy by the rollercoaster of emotions. As you read through my future blogs, I hope you don't think my life is as crazy as the movies!

  1. I look forward to reading more of the perspectives you'll bring to slicing because I learned a bunch already and enjoyed how your voice comes shining through these words on screen. Meanwhile, in other news, have you seen this list: https://www.theringer.com/movies/2022/4/18/23026994/rom-com-movies-ranking

I, too, am a foodie and lover of books. I have a feeling we'll be reading each other's writing.

  3. I love when I learn something new from someone's blog! We don't have very many Filipinos in our community, so I've never heard of a Pinay before. I am familiar with the pressure to be in healthcare that many of my Arab and Asian students have faced though, and I applaud the way you decided to follow your heart and inspire others to follow theirs! They will benefit from a role model like you!
